Bubble Yum by Elizabeth & Liz Evans

Stitch a fun bubble skirt for a toddler in your life. Easily adjust the measurements to make a skirt that fits any size.

Supplies

2 matching or coordinating fabrics (main fabric & lining; amount according to measurements)

1/2"-wide elastic (amount according to measurements)

Matching thread

Prep It

Take the following measurements of the intended skirt wearer: length (waist to knee), waist (around fullest part of waist), elastic (waist measurement divided by two, minus 2"); record.

Cut It

Cut the elastic to the determined length.

From the main fabric, cut one rectangle measuring 3"x the recorded waist measurement for the waistband. Multiply the waist measurement by 2. Add 3" to the length measurement. Cut one rectangle according to those measurements for the outer skirt.

Multiply the waist measurement by 1.5. Subtract 3" from the length measurement. From the lining fabric, cut one rectangle according to those measurements for the lining skirt.

Sew It

Fold the waistband in half widthwise with right sides together. Stitch the ends to form a tube.

Repeat to stitch the outer skirt and lining skirt into tubes. Designate one outer-skirt raw edge as the upper edge, paying attention to the print direction if applicable.

Stitch two rows of gathering stitches 1/4" apart, placing the first row of stitching 1/4" from the main fabric-tube lower edge. Leave long thread tails at the stitching beginning and end. Pull the bobbin threads to evenly gather the outer-skirt edge to fit the lining skirt width. Knot the thread ends.

With right sides together, pin the outer-skirt lower edge to the lining-skirt lower edge. Stitch, using a 5/8" seam allowance. Turn the skirt right side out. Align the skirt upper edges so the lining lower edge tucks under the outer skirt, forming the bubble shape.

Stitch two rows of gathering stitches 1/4" apart, placing the first row of stitches 1/4" from the outer-skirt upper edge (1). 1

Leave long thread tails at the stitching beginning and end. Pull the bobbin threads to evenly gather the outer skirt to fit the lining skirt width. Knot the thread ends. Stitch the outer and lining skirts together along the upper edge using a 5/8" seam allowance.

Serge- or zigzag-finish one waistband long edge. With right sides together, align the opposite long raw edge with the skirt upper edge; pin, and then stitch.

Fold the waistband in half lengthwise toward the wrong side, slightly overlapping the previous stitching line with the serger or zigzag stitches.

Place the skirt on a flat work surface with the front facing up and the seam at the center back. Pin-mark the skirt sides at the waistband (2).

2

On the skirt back, stitch just above the waistband seam from the right side, from pin to pin (3).

3

Insert the elastic through the casing. Pin each elastic end inside the waistband at the pin-marks. Stitch the elastic ends from the waistband upper edge to the waistband lower edge (4).

4

Finish stitching the front-waistband seam from the skirt right side.
